Many cities are building more bike lanes, sometimes by removing lanes that cars used to drive on. Supporters say this makes cycling safer and reduces traffic and pollution. Critics say it makes traffic worse for the many people who still need to drive. Should cities spend more money on bike lanes than on roads for cars? Why or why not?
Kenji
Yes. When cycling feels safe, many more people do it. In my hometown, the number of cyclists doubled after the city built protected bike lanes, and traffic downtown actually got lighter.
Olivia
I'm not convinced. Bike lanes are great for young, healthy people who live close to work. But in winter, or for people with long trips or small children, a car is still necessary. Cities shouldn't make life harder for them.
