Dr. Kwame Boateng
Several departments have replaced final examinations with continuous assessment spread across the term. Supporters argue that it measures learning more fairly; others argue that something is lost which the new arrangement cannot replace. What is your view, and what do you think is actually at stake?

Lena
Continuous assessment is plainly better. One bad morning no longer decides a year, students who are ill or anxious are not punished for it, and feedback arrives while there is still time to use it. A final exam measures how well you perform under a particular kind of pressure, and almost nothing after graduation resembles that pressure.

What is lost is the demand to hold a whole subject in your head at once. Continuous assessment lets you learn a topic, be tested on it and forget it, and I have done exactly that. A final exam is the only point at which anyone asks you to connect week two to week ten, and connecting them is most of what understanding a subject means.
