Some universities have begun replacing timed written examinations with coursework assessed over several weeks. Supporters argue that this measures the skills students will actually use after graduating. Critics argue that it advantages students with more time, quieter homes and better internet access, and that it is far harder to verify as the student's own work. Which form of assessment do you think universities should rely on, and why?

I favour coursework. An exam measures how well you perform under an artificial constraint that almost no profession imposes. Real work is done with notes, colleagues and time to revise, and assessment should look like that.

I take the opposite view. A timed exam is the only assessment where everyone is in the same conditions for the same hours. Coursework quietly measures how comfortable your life is, and that is not what a degree is supposed to certify.
