Dr. Alina Ferreira
Many museums hold objects that were removed from other countries during the colonial period. Some have begun returning them. Supporters of return argue that the objects were taken without meaningful consent and that they mean more where they came from. Opponents argue that large collections let visitors compare civilisations in one place, that some receiving institutions cannot yet care for fragile items, and that the principle has no clear stopping point. Should such objects be returned? Why?

Tomas
I support return, and the argument about caring for the objects is the one I would drop first. It was used to justify keeping things a century ago and it is used now, and in the intervening century the receiving institutions have been built and staffed. The claim keeps being made and keeps not being checked.

Ingrid
I agree that the care argument is often lazy, but Tomas is answering the weakest version of the case. The stronger version is about the collection rather than the object. A gallery where you can walk from one civilisation to the next teaches something no single national museum can, and that is lost object by object without anyone deciding to lose it.
