Many young people finish school without knowing how to manage money — how to make a budget, avoid debt, or save for the future. In response, some universities now require every student, whatever their major, to take a course in personal finance. Others argue that universities should focus on academic subjects and that students can learn these skills elsewhere. Should universities require all students to take a personal finance course? Why or why not?

Yes. I've seen friends get into serious credit card debt in their first year simply because nobody ever explained how interest works. A required course would prevent a lot of these problems, and it would help every student, no matter what they study.

I don't think it should be required. Students already have so many required courses and very little room in their schedules. Besides, there are excellent free resources online. Students who want to learn about money can easily find the information themselves.
