Several governments now require large companies to publish the carbon emissions produced by their supply chains, not only by their own operations. Supporters say this is the only way to make emissions visible where they actually occur. Critics reply that the figures are estimates built on other estimates, and that publishing them creates an appearance of precision that does not exist. Do you think such reporting should be required? Why or why not?
Nadia
I support the requirement. Companies cannot manage what they never measure, and once a number is public, journalists and investors start asking why it is not falling. Even an imperfect figure changes behaviour.
Tomas
I am less convinced. A supply-chain estimate can be out by a factor of two, and a company that reports honestly may look worse than one that reports optimistically. That punishes exactly the wrong firms.
