Dr. Haddad
Some universities have stopped giving letter grades in students' first year. Instead, first-year courses are simply marked 'pass' or 'fail.' Supporters say this reduces stress while students adjust to university life. Critics say it gives students less reason to work hard. Do you think first-year courses should be graded pass/fail? Why or why not?

Emma
Yes. My first semester was really hard. I was living away from home for the first time, and I was so worried about grades that I couldn't enjoy learning anything. Pass/fail would let students focus on understanding.

Kenji
I don't agree. Grades tell you how well you're actually doing. If everything is pass/fail, many students will do the minimum, and then they'll have a shock in their second year when grades suddenly count.
