Some universities now require students to declare any use of generative AI in their written work, while others have banned it outright for assessed work. Supporters of disclosure say that a ban is unenforceable and that learning to use the tools well is itself a skill. Supporters of a ban say that a declared shortcut is still a shortcut, and that assessment is meant to measure what the student can do unaided. Which approach should universities take, and why?

I favour disclosure. Every professional field these students will enter already uses these tools, and a university that pretends otherwise is training people for a world that no longer exists. What we should assess is judgement about when the tool helps and when it misleads.

A ban, for assessed work at least. Sofia's argument applies to the workplace, not to the point of an examination. We do not let people use a calculator in an arithmetic test, not because calculators are bad but because the test is about the arithmetic.
