Dr. Fischer
Many governments offer people money, often several thousand dollars, to help them buy electric cars. Supporters say this speeds up the move away from gasoline and reduces pollution. Critics argue that the money mostly helps people who could already afford a new car, and that it would be better spent on other solutions. Should governments pay people to buy electric cars? Why or why not?
Leila
Yes. Electric cars are still more expensive than gasoline cars, so without help, most people won't switch. The sooner more people drive them, the sooner prices will fall for everyone.
Tom
I'm not convinced. Most people who get these payments are fairly wealthy. That money could improve buses and trains, which would help many more people and take cars off the road completely.
