Beavers as Ecosystem Engineers

Few animals change their surroundings as much as beavers do. By cutting down trees and building dams across streams, beavers create ponds where they can build their homes, called lodges, and escape from predators such as wolves. Because their activity reshapes entire landscapes, ecologists describe beavers as “ecosystem engineers.”

The ponds behind beaver dams have effects that reach far beyond the beavers themselves. The slow, still water provides a home for fish, frogs, insects, and water birds. The dams also hold back water during heavy rains, which reduces flooding downstream, and they release it slowly during dry periods. In addition, the water that spreads across the land keeps the surrounding soil and plants wet, so areas around beaver ponds often stay green during wildfires.

Beavers were once found across much of North America and Europe, but by the early twentieth century, hunting for their fur had made them rare in many regions. In recent decades, several countries, including the United Kingdom, have brought them back. Not everyone welcomes them, however. Farmers sometimes complain that beaver dams flood their fields, so some programs now relocate beavers that cause problems instead of killing them.
