Every evening at closing time, Rosa's Bakery on Elm Street used to throw away about thirty loaves of unsold bread. Since September, the bakery has been giving the bread to the Oakdale Family Shelter instead.
“It always felt wrong to waste good bread,” said owner Rosa Vega. A volunteer from the shelter picks up the bread every night at seven.
According to the shelter, the donations save it about $400 a month, money that it now uses to buy fresh fruit.
